Don't you just hate it when someone tells you to 'calm down', 'chill out' or 'just relax'?
One of the joys of life is that you never quite know what's lying around the next corner, but sometimes the world just throws you a curve ball that, try as you might, you cannot avoid. But what effect can stress actually have on your skin? We're here this #TopTipTuesday to find out...
Alright, let's start with the science:
Sadly, this week our skin myth is not a myth at all; stress can definitely have a profound effect on your skin.
Stress and anxiety cause a chemical response within the body that makes skin more sensitive and reactive. It also causes the release of certain hormones like cortisol, that tells the glands in your skin to produce more oil, which in turn can exacerbate conditions like acne, eczema and rosacea.
During stressful situations, there is often an increase in nerve signalling which is what causes the sensation of an itch; this is bad news for rosacea sufferers anyway, but can also cause people to scratch and pick at their skin - often subconsciously - resulting in more swelling and redness. Because of this, stress and skin trouble can become a vicious cycle; you get stressed, you get bad skin, you get stressed because you have bad skin, you're skin gets worse and you come full circle.
Times of stress also usually mean periods of great upheaval in your life; moving house, having children, working late, starting a new job, the list goes on and on. What this can also mean, however, is an upheaval in your daily skin routine. When using products with a high concentration of ingredients, like SkinMed® products, missing out parts of your daily routine can massively interfere with how your skin products are designed to work, depleting the levels of active ingredients working on your skin, and effectively undoing some of your hard work.
So what can you do about it?
As much as we all hate those people that tell you to calm down and relax when you're having a perfectly justified reaction thank you very much - they are usually right.
It's easy sometimes to get so wound up in something that's going wrong or that you can't control and it can become difficult to see the bigger picture. Stress and worry are just another part of life; utterly unavoidable, but what matters is how you deal with it.
Here are our top tips for keeping your head when all around you are losing theirs:
1. Take some time out for yourself - this could be anything from sitting down to read a book on your lunch break, to swapping a shower for a long hot bath once a week, or taking a well earned holiday somewhere warm and sunny. It doesn't matter how big or small you go, the important thing is to leave whatever is stressing you out at the door.
2. Get enough sleep - sometimes this is easier said than done, but whether you're worried about deadlines, work performance, or the children's costumes for the school play, there is nothing that can be done at two in the morning that can't be done better after a good night's sleep.
3. Stay hydrated - the temptation when in stressful situations is to overdo the caffeine during the day to give you a boost, or maybe have a glass or two of wine on an evening to calm you back down; either way you're only going to dehydrate yourself and won't be doing your skin any favours. As you'll know from reading our previous #TopTipTuesday, keeping yourself properly hydrated from the inside can work wonders for your skin.
4. Lastly, and in our opinion most importantly, don't neglect your skin - when you're really invested in a skin routine that works, the worst thing you can do is to throw away all the progress you've made as soon as the going gets tough. We recommend the twice a day, every day routine for you to get the best out of your products; any less and you won't get high enough levels of the active ingredients in your skin to maintain the effects, any more and you're actually more likely to do some damage by over-exfoliating or potentially overloading on those active ingredients (see our other #TopTipTuesday to learn more)
So there we have it, as much as we may wish it didn't, stress does have an effect on your skin. But times of stress are only a small part of the bigger picture, and it's how we cope with it that can make the difference; as the old adage goes, 'This too shall pass'.
To give you one less thing to worry about, why not see what kind of a difference the right skin routine can have for you?
