The internet is a fantastic tool for when you know what you want, but you don't know where to get it from; recent studies have shown that the average online shopper will visit around 10 different sources before settling on a product to buy.
The possibilities are seemingly endless, with hundreds of brands, suppliers and prices available, and more and more new companies making the internet their home every day. Add to that the shops on the high street and you've got a pretty extensive list on your hands for every time you shop, which can make things confusing, particularly when you're shopping for a new skin routine.
Skin products aren't like other products; clothes you can try on to see if they suit you; furniture you can measure to fit your home; if technology doesn't work the way you want it to, it's usually easy to return, but when it comes to your skin there's no quick way to know what's right for you. This can mean a lot of wasted time, money and effort, as you painstakingly work your way through every brand without seeing the results you want.
That's why this #TopTipTuesday, we're going to give you the inside scoop on what skin care companies are really claiming their products do, and how to choose the skin routine that is right for you.
Here are some common warning signs to look out for:
1. Get-out phrases
This is when a company uses a word like 'help' or 'appearance' when describing what their products do, for example,
'Scientifically proven to help reduce the appearance of spots' instead of, 'Scientifically proven to target all causes and symptoms of acne'
Companies will use wording like this to get out of any responsibility when their products don't work, leaving you disappointed and out of pocket; if the products are actually expected to work, they'll say it plainly and without any wiggle-room.
2. Symptoms, not causes
Many brands will claim that their products can reduce things like redness and inflammation, or that they help to reduce oily skin, which can be a contributing factor to getting spots.
The fact is, these companies are merely helping to reduce the symptoms of spots, without actually claiming to do anything about preventing the causes of blemishes in the future, or about any kind of long-term relief.
3. Science-y sounding nonsense
Acne is a medical condition, and as such requires a medically licenced product to effectively treat it. One phrase that many companies will use to describe their products is 'dermatologically tested', which to the untrained eye, could sound like a pretty impressive qualification. In reality, however, all 'dermatologically tested' means is that it has been tested on human skin, nothing more - which, for a product designed to go on your skin, should be the very least that you expect.
It doesn't even tell you what tests were conducted on the skin, or whether the product actually passed those tests!
Another thing you'll probably see is a lot of made-up words that all sound very dynamic and impressive, but don't actually mean very much; in order for your research to mean anything, you're going to need to know exactly what you're putting on your skin.
One of the only ways you can tell if a product is likely to work for you is if it has the right active ingredients and is clinically proven to deliver results, which leads us onto...
4. Bragging rights
Companies that have decent success rates will be singing them from the rooftops! If they can let their customers know that their products work 70% or 80% of the time, then you can be fairly sure that those facts and figures will be posted with pride in any given product's description, to let you know that you're more than likely to be in a majority and that they have the science to prove it.
The only reason a brand wouldn't showcase results like this is if they don't have any; either the testing they performed was not conclusive, or it was and the results just aren't worth bragging about. Either way, it's better to know you're in safe hands with a company who can confidently tell you what you can expect and how they intend to deliver.
5. Posh prices
One of the greatest skin myths out there is that with products and treatments 'you get what you pay for'. This allows more affordable companies to shrug off any complaints because their stuff is just cheap and cheerful, while more expensive products automatically earn a higher status in the eye of the potential shopper - how else could they justify such extortionate prices unless their products work?
What you end up with is a hierarchy of desirable products based purely on the price tag, and not on the quality, and like the emperor's new clothes, nobody wants to question what the higher-end companies are selling.
Look for products that offer you a rough time frame for when you can expect to see results, and - even better - a guarantee that if your expectations aren't met, they intend to do something about it, so you know you're not just throwing money down the bathroom sink.

Look out for what companies don't say as much as what they do, to figure out what it is they're actually claiming to deliver. That way you can easily tell which brands aren't worth your time, and which ones just might offer the skin solution that's right for you.
