Easter is over, and we all know what that means… we’ve all probably eaten more chocolate than is good for us! But is what your mother told you about chocolate giving you spots really true?
The answer is yes... and no.
Some say that the theory once held in the scientific community of chocolate giving you spots is around fifty years out of date; this may be true, but only because the science involved has become a lot more complicated. So that’s why we’re here to break it down.
The good news is that there is no hard and fast rule that chocolate will definitely give you spots. However, Peter Roberts, Head Trainer and Managing Director of SkinMed®, says "studies have shown that over indulging in sugar, fat and dairy could promote inflammatory responses within the body that can exacerbate acne symptoms, especially if you are already suffering with acne. Sadly chocolate, particularly milk and white chocolate with its low cocoa content, has all of these things in spades."
The other side to this skin myth is how chocolate can affect rosacea sufferers. While the old wives tale was that chocolate just gives you spots, chocolate is now also commonly listed amongst foods to avoid if you suffer from rosacea, with hot chocolate having the double whammy effect of also being a hot drink – yet another thing you’re supposed to avoid!
So what should you do? Let everyone else have all the fun, while you resign yourself to a life without chocolate? Wrong!
With the right skin treatment and a degree of balance to your diet, both you and your skin can enjoy chocolate as much as the next person, without the worry of breakouts and flare ups.
